Presenter: Brenda Faz-Cresie, Infiltrator Water Technologies, Walker, LA
The concept of rural development comes with numerous challenges, from providing accessible roads for occupants to ensuring utilities are attainable. Decentralized wastewater treatment can be a cost-effective solution to service rural communities where municipal wastewater access is too expensive or simply not feasible. However, it is critical to understand and thoroughly review the design of a decentralized system, from collection to treatment to disposal, to ensure performance efficiency and effectiveness. A poorly designed treatment train can result in costly fines and maintenance fees to the owner, and more importantly, have potentially drastic negative impacts to the surrounding environment. Additionally, there are several regulatory components that must be considered when designing a decentralized wastewater treatment system. This presentation will review high level design considerations for decentralized wastewater treatment, from collection to treatment to final effluent dispersal.
